In October 2016 two authorised representatives from Healthwatch Sheffield conducted an enter and view visit to dental services provided by the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Charles Clifford Dental Hospital site is a Dental Teaching Hospital offering free services performed by University of Sheffield dental students under the supervision of experienced staff.
The visit was arranged and advertised in advance. Representatives met with the Clinical Services Manager, talked to a consultant, dental nurses, a receptionist and three patients.
The purpose of the visit was to gather information about accessibility, identify examples of good working practice, observe the environment and processes in the public areas during surgery sessions and identify any areas for improvement.
Representatives found that the service and treatment was appreciated by patients and delivered by staff who communicated well and in a supportive manner. The building was well presented but old. This affected access for some patients and led to difficulties in organising treatment areas. Public transport options and disabled parking was also an issue. Services for children, information leaflets, opening hours, staff and training were also reviewed as part of the visit.
Healthwatch made six recommendations regarding disabled parking, signage, meet and greet volunteers, data protection and managing phone appointment calls.
The service provider’s responses are included as are their plans to partnership work with the local Council and other agencies to achieve improvements.
