Healthwatch North Lincolnshire conducted an Enter and View visit to Carseld Residential Home on 14 May 2024 to assess the quality of care, resident experience, and staff support. Healthwatch staff talked with 14 people including residents, staff, and management.
Key findings:
- Residents were generally satisfied with their care, particularly enjoying meal choices, though one resident felt food was cut too small.
- Family and friends felt their loved ones were well cared for, but one concern was raised about a resident being left thirsty in bed. The manager addressed the issue.
- Staff reported enjoying their roles and feeling supported, though some wanted more face-to-face training. Staff turnover was noted as a challenge.
- Observations showed staff responding well to residents’ needs, but minor maintenance issues, such as chipped paint and a broken toilet seat, were noted.
Recommendations:
- Introduce a more varied activities schedule with pictorial guides.
- Review call system options for residents unable to use call bells.
- Implement a monitoring system to ensure bedridden residents receive timely care.
- Provide picture menus alongside written ones to aid meal selection.
Service provider response:
Carseld Residential Home acknowledges the findings and has committed to implementing changes, including updating the activities rota, reviewing call systems, ensuring regular staff checks for bedridden residents, and introducing a pictorial menu.
