Summary of report content

Healthwatch Warrington conducted and Enter and View visit to Callands Care Home. The home is divided into five units, providing personal and nursing care for up to 120 people, including younger adults and people living with dementia.

Observation by the Enter and View representatives reported that: the home was easy to find, with good signage visible from the road and a large, well-maintained car park; the entrance was clearly signposted and reception area was clean and well decorated; the activity provision was under review and staff were working hard to improve it; the dining rooms were welcoming; each of the lounges visited had a pleasant atmosphere; the bathrooms appeared clean and spacious, but one had a broken handle on the outside of the door, not all communal bathrooms were labelled as such, and there were no modesty curtains in place; and outdoor areas were well-maintained.

Residents appeared to be happy and comfortable, and the residents and relatives spoken to commented that both the food and staff were very good.

The report made four recommendations: to fit modesty curtains in bathrooms to ensure that residents' privacy is maintained; to consider locking the lounge which was not in use; to lock the bathroom with the broken door handle until it was replaced; and to remove the out-of-use computers being stored in one of the lounges.
