Healthwatch Wirral conducted an Enter and View visit to Caldy Manor Care Home in November 2018, which provides up to 35 residents with expert care for dementia.
The report stated that the home is not well signposted but this is because the council prevents signs being displayed on the main road. The home also provides a variety of activities and events including meals with the community and visits from the local school children. Staff turnover is low and the manager reported that staffing levels are adequate to provide safe care to residents. with comprehensive training opportunities. The home has a Tele-triage System, where iPad's are used to contact senior nurses when a resident has a fall so that there is a reduced need to dial 111. Complaints policies are in place and understood by all residents and their families. Medication is stored in a Clinic Room and administered by trained staff. The MUST tool is used to monitor dietary intake and a good choice of food is available. Care plans are holistic and reviewed regularly to accommodate for any changes in patient needs and conditions.
Observations of the environment were positive in that the home was clean and tidy with spacious communal areas and well furnished bedrooms. The external areas were well maintained and provided furniture for residents to use. Staff were observed having positive attitudes towards the residents, offering care and support when required. The residents reported that they loved living at Caldy Manor Care Home.
Recommendations were made by the Enter and View representatives, which included: displaying Healthwatch ‘Your Voice’ leaflets to allow feedback to be gathered independently and signage could be improved or made Dementia Friendly in the future to ensure that residents can navigate the intricate set of corridors in some parts of the home.
The service provider responded to the recommendations and asked for leaflets to be sent and explained that dementia patients are always accompanied by staff members.
