Summary of report content

Healthwatch representatives visited Bury Lodge in April 2017 as part of a Dignity in Care project. The visit was unscheduled although 2 weeks’ notice was given of the intention to visit the care home. A date and time was not specified.

Bury Lodge provides residential care for 20 people, some of whom live with dementia. Up to 31 residents can be accommodated. Healthwatch representatives talked to 4 members of staff, 2 visitors and 4 residents. They also observed residents in different locations within the Care Home including the dining room and 8 staff.

The report provides a score out of 5 stars and commentary under the following headings: how people are treated, personal choices, just like being at home, privacy and quality of life.

Findings concluded that residents seem comfortable both physically and emotionally and they have an opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. Bury Lodge demonstrated good standards of care regarding dignity and respect. Residents commented that the variety of food and its quality needed attention.

Recommendations were, therefore, made to Bury Lodge to review menus in light of the resident’s concerns and to address transport issues to provide more opportunities for residents to engage in activities outside the home.

The Service Provider responded to the report findings and their comments are included in the report. They relate to personal choice, transport, just like being at home and quality of life.
