Healthwatch Solihull conducted an Enter and View visit to Birchmere House care home in August 2018. Feedback was collected from residents, relatives and staff members.
The Enter and View represtatives found that the home was clean and bright with photographs of residents and their families taking part in activities. The garden was wheelchair friendly with wide pathways. Residents were able to pick the activities they wanted through the residents' meetings and 1:1s. Residents were happy with the care they received here. Relatives also felt they were welcome and were confident that their loved one was well taken care of. Staff explained that they felt well supported and that they could approach management, whilst other staff said they felt under appreciated and not valued.
Recommendations included that the management need to arrange cover for staff rather than staff worrying about organising this themselves; when administering medication staff should explain to residents what they are being offered; and use a rewards system to ensure staff are valued.
The service provider responded and has detailed where changes have occured.
