Healthwatch Cumbia conducted an unannounced Enter and View visit to Bethel House, a privately run Dementia Unit for up to 62 residents, on 17 January 2014 as part of a planned programme of work.
The report notes that, because Bethel House residents have advanced Dementia, much of the comment in this report has been informed by observations and conversations with staff and visitors rather than with the residents.
The Healthwatch Cumbria Enter and View Authorised Representatives were advised of the training and support offered to staff and have suggested that a formal internal induction programme be implemented to help build the confidence of new staff when working with residents with advanced dementia.
The report suggests that the Home consider ways of creating positive opportunities for feedback from residents and their families, and sharing of improvement ideas as there was some evidence that residents may be reluctant to express their views on improvements.
The visiting team note that while there was an activities organiser, there was no evidence of activities taking place and they recommended creating an easy read or pictorial activity guide that could be displayed in the communal area.
There is no response from the provider included in the report.
