Summary of report content

Healthwatch North Yorkshire carried out an Enter and View visit to Beechwood Place Nursing Home in November 2024. Overall, the home was found to provide a welcoming and friendly environment where residents appeared content and well cared for. Staff were observed to be approachable and knowledgeable about residents’ individual needs, and residents, relatives and staff generally spoke positively about life in the home.

Residents and relatives praised the quality of care, food and communication. Activities were tailored to residents’ interests and included games, crafts, music and outings, while relatives appreciated regular newsletters and being kept informed about events and activities. Staff were observed assisting residents sensitively during mealtimes, and residents generally felt they received the support they needed.

Healthwatch identified some areas for improvement. The layout of the building could be confusing, particularly for people living with dementia, and clearer signage would help residents and visitors navigate the home more easily. Communal areas were described as functional rather than homely, and observers felt the seating arrangements did not encourage social interaction. Although activities were available, Healthwatch felt more could be done to encourage residents, particularly those spending most of their time in their rooms, to engage in meaningful activities and social contact.

Healthwatch concluded that Beechwood Place delivers good-quality care with positive relationships between residents, families and staff. Recommendations focused on improving signage, creating more welcoming communal spaces, making better use of outdoor areas, helping staff identify issues with hearing aids, increasing meaningful activities and social opportunities, and keeping online information about the home updated.
