Healthwatch Salford undertook an Enter and View visit to Barton Brook Care Home on 17 and 18 April 2024.
The visit found that the home had experienced a period of instability due to frequent management changes, but staff morale appeared to have improved significantly since a previous visit. Residents and relatives were generally positive about the care provided and described the home as clean, spacious and welcoming. Staff were observed interacting with residents in a caring and respectful manner, and the home was found to be attentive to residents’ healthcare, cultural and religious needs.
Feedback about activities and food was mixed. Some residents enjoyed the activities on offer, while others wanted a greater variety of opportunities, more intellectual stimulation and more trips outside the home. Opinions on food quality and portion sizes also varied, although relatives generally felt the food was satisfactory. Some residents and relatives raised concerns about limited access to dental and optician services, high staff turnover and the use of agency staff, which they felt could affect continuity of care.
Healthwatch Salford recommended increasing activity provision, recruiting additional activity coordinators, improving signage and information throughout the home, and making feedback and complaints processes clearer and more accessible. The provider accepted the recommendations and outlined actions including expanding activity resources, reviewing communication materials and introducing additional opportunities for residents and relatives to share feedback.
