Healthwatch Sandwell undertook an Enter and View visit to Bartholomew Lodge Nursing Home in Wednesbury on 26 January 2026.
The visit involved structured conversations with residents, relatives, and staff, alongside environmental observations of the building, signage, cleanliness, accessibility, and safety. The external environment was found to be well maintained and secure, although signage was slightly misleading because the main entrance was located at the rear of the building. The internal environment was described as clean, welcoming, and comfortable, with good lighting, secure handrails, accessible bathing facilities, and communal spaces that supported social interaction.
Staff were observed interacting with residents in a respectful, calm, and compassionate manner, and residents reported feeling listened to and supported. Care was described as person‑centred, with residents able to make choices about their daily routines, meals, clothing, room décor, and activities. Individual preferences were accommodated wherever possible, including flexible bedtimes, meal choices, and family visits, particularly for residents receiving palliative care.
The home was found to provide a wide range of essential services, including GP access, pharmacy support, visits from allied health professionals, and regular activities led by a full‑time activity coordinator. Activities included music sessions, arts and crafts, bingo, one‑to‑one sensory sessions, and supported outings into the community, all aimed at promoting wellbeing and inclusion.
Accessibility for residents with mobility needs was generally strong, with lifts, ramps, handrails, clear fire exits, and appropriate evacuation equipment in place. However, several dementia‑friendly improvements were identified, such as the need for contrasting toilet seats, clearer bedroom door identifiers using names and pictures, and more visual signage to support orientation and independence.
Staffing levels were reported to be stable, with good staff retention and positive views about management support and training opportunities. All staff had completed mandatory training, including Oliver McGowan training on learning disability and autism, although British Sign Language training was not currently available and was identified as an area for future development.
Overall, the report concludes that Bartholomew Lodge provides a warm, homely, and caring environment, with staff demonstrating strong relationships with residents and a clear commitment to dignified, high‑quality care. The report makes a small number of recommendations to further improve accessibility, communication, and transparency, particularly around complaints information and dementia‑friendly design features.
