On 31st July 2019 and on 15th January 2020, Healthwatch Havering undertook enter and view visits to Barleycroft in Romford, which is a nursing home in the borough. The home could accommodate 80 residents but there were 73 at the time of the visit.
On the day of the first visit the observed conditions by Healthwatch staff were disappointing- the exterior of the building was untidy, security appeared lax, and the overall appearance was that of neglect. Residents spoken to but also uncomplimentary and staff seemed unmotivated and inadequately trained. During the second visit however, the team notice considerable activity in progress- the windows were cleaner, and the dining room floors were being cleaned and mopped; the flooring was replaced with a laminated surface and the carpets throughout the building were being replaced. A new large TV had been installed; the garden it was much tidier with decking and some seating; however, the toilet was full of junk. Staff said they enjoyed working at the home and more staff were now employed to tend to residents in their rooms in pairs.
Overall, the team were impressed with the improvements made at the home since the July visit. They did not feel it was necessary to offer recommendations but agreed that a further visit can be undertaken later in the year to review progress.
