Healthwatch Cumbria conducted an Enter and View on Barchester Newlands Care Centre, a privately owned nursing home . The visit was conducted on 5th June 2017.
The visit was arranged as part of Healthwatch Cumbria's enter and view schedule.
Observation by the enter and view representatives reported that:
The home was well run and well maintained. All the staff were caring and gave residents dignity, respect and compasssion. There were plaenty of activities for residents to be involved in includin staff assistant a resident to use technology (skype) to contact family members who lived far away.
There were sometimes issues around access to health services (a member of the Frail Elderly Assessment Team (FEAT) was sent instead of a Doctor) but in general access was good.
Healthwatch Cumbria were told that the home are working with the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) trialling a triage system to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital through falls by frail and elderly residents in care homes.
Residents were happy with the food provided.
HWC commends the staff for encouraging residents to use technology to communicate with and feel included in their family’s daily lives when separated by distance and geography.
