Summary of report content

Healthwatch Staffordshire conducted an Enter and View visit on Ashcroft Hollow Care Home, a nursing home with 43 places caring for adults over 65 years, on 25th July 2017.

The purpose of the visit was to follow up on the findings of the latest CQC report which found that several areas required improvement – in particular the staffing levels and whether residents were able to bathe or shower on a regular basis.

The Enter and View representatives reported:

- internally the building is clean, well decorated and uncluttered; residents rooms have en-suite toilets but no baths/showers; there is a well equipped dining room and kitchen;

- use of agency staff is limited and staff familiar with the home and residents are requested;

- residents had a good rapport with staff who were friendly, gentle and aware of individual needs;

- an activity programme was in place covering an eight-week period – the activities included exercise, skittles, darts, gardening, quizzes;

- the home does not have the capacity to carry out group trips but residents can go out on an individual basis;

- the kitchen is well managed with meals cooked from scratch and a choice of meals available;

- residents’ nutrition, hydration and weight is monitored;

- the manager commented that a new dependency tool was being used which had aided in improving staffing levels;

- the manager was friendly and welcoming;

- overall the home was well-run, efficient and calm.
