Healthwatch Coventry carried out an enter and view visit to Arden Park Care Home on 17 April 2015 to understand residents’ experiences and assess quality of life, care and support within the home. During the visit, Healthwatch spoke with five residents, one visitor and three members of staff, observed the environment and reviewed how the service operated.
The visit found the home to be clean, well organised and welcoming, with residents appearing comfortable and positive about their surroundings. Staff were observed treating residents with patience, kindness and respect, supporting their independence and maintaining their dignity. Feedback from residents, visitors and staff was generally positive, with praise for the quality of care, food, activities and the approachable management team.
Healthwatch noted a calm atmosphere and a range of activities, including bingo, exercise sessions, gardening, knitting and pampering activities. Residents reported enjoying the food and having choices about meals and daily routines. The report also highlighted dementia-friendly features within the home, including signage and ongoing plans to improve the environment for people living with dementia.
Healthwatch made several recommendations, including increasing organised outings and entertainment, introducing more colour and visual cues around the home to aid navigation for residents with dementia, developing a website for the home and reviewing arrangements for access to drinks. Overall, the report concluded that Arden Park Care Home provided a positive environment with caring staff and a strong commitment to residents’ wellbeing.
