Summary of report content

Healthwatch Westminster and Healthwatch Kensington and Chelsea undertook an Enter and View visit to Amazon Ward in the Mental Health Unit of St Charles Hospital. Amazon Ward is a mixed ward for adult aged 18 – 65. They spoke to 5 patients, 1 carer and 1 member of staff.   This visit aimed to learn more about patient experiences of care, and their knowledge of mental health advocacy and the complaints system. The visits also aimed to evaluate whether services are culturally appropriate and sensitive for the ethnically diverse patients on the ward. Additionally, they were keen to understand if the closure of the mental health inpatient ward at the Gordon hospital in Westminster had affected patients receiving visitors, and if the activities offered by the wards were consistent across both sites.

The report looks at the cleanliness and environment of the ward, information to patients, activities, access to the balcony, patients’ views of staff, care plans and medication, complaints, safeguarding, cultural sensitivity, access to visitors, what is working and what could be improved, feedback from staff.

The report contains nine recommendations.
