In December 2017, Healthwatch Lancashire conducted an Enter and View visit at Across the Bay Care Home in Morecambe, a privately owned care home for the elderly. The purpose of the visit was to observe the service, consider how it may be improved and disseminate good practice.
Three Enter and View representatives made an announced visit on 12th December 2017. They engaged with 7 residents, 3 staff and 2 relatives. Discussion was structured around four themes: environment, care, nutrition and activities, which were designed to gather information concerning residents overall experience of living at the home. The team also recorded their own observations using a traffic light scale to rate the areas.
Staff, relatives and residents spoke well of the home. Representatives felt that the culture of the home reflected in the confidence and comfort of the respondents who seemed welcoming and happy to engage. The facility was particularly notable for the level of person-centred provision and homely environment. The activities and food being appreciated by the all participants. Staff at the home had produced a thoughtful and unique “Christmas at Morecambe Bay” brochure which included serving a replicate wedding breakfast of the managers upcoming family wedding. Representatives also saw many instances of caring interactions between staff and residents, including the manager. Based on the traffic light ratings, the Enter and View Representatives gave the home an overall Green rating.
