Summary of report content

Healthwatch Rutland conducted an Enter and View on Aberdeen House Care Home is a residential care home which caters for up to 18 residents who has private and local authority fee paying residents and is used by the local authority for re-enablement following hospital discharge so allowing patients who are not yet well enough to return to their own homes. The home also caters for residents who have dementia.

The visit was conducted on 23rd June 2017.

Observation by the enter and view representatives reported that:

Aberdeen House is a retirement home used by privately and council funded residents and by the council for re-enablement.

The home had friendly staff and happy residents with some friends and family making a special effort to communicate with us positively.

Disabled access to the building is not clearly signed.

Internally some areas of the home appear tired but the owners are undertaking a staged redecoration/refurbishment programme.

There is internet access for residents (including a specially adapted computer), electronic residents’ call monitoring and CCTV.

Activities for residents appeared wide ranging and information for residents and their families includes regular newsletter and face to face or electronic communication.

While there is secure access and egress through the front door this is not the case at the rear of the building.

Following this, the enter and view made some recommendations which was based around looking at reviewing the access arrangements and signage (particularly disabled access). It was also recommended to make sure the visitors sign in book should be reviewed, the directors should continue with the refurbishment and redecoration programme with the home as well as continuing the current processes of staff training and development.

The service provider reviewed these recommendations and provided feedback on how these were being addressed.
