Summary of report content

Healthwatch Salford carried out an Enter and View visit to Abbeydale Nursing Home, a nursing care home with places for up to 24 residents.

The home was evaluated against eight quality indicators: strong, visible management; staff with the time and skills to do their jobs; good knowledge of each individual resident and how their needs may be changing; a varied programme of activities; quality, choice and flexibility around food and mealtimes; ensuring residents can regularly see health professionals such as GPs, dentists, opticians or chiropodists; accommodating residents’ personal, cultural and lifestyle needs; and being an open environment where feedback is actively sought and used.

[PASTE SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS SECTION]

The previous CQC Inspection Report had rated this care home as 'requiring improvement'. On the day of this Enter and View Visit, the lift to upper floors had broken down and was awaiting repairs. This meant that several of the ground floor rooms had been converted into communal bedrooms on a temporary basis. Two residents had remained upstairs and were unable to come down to the communal lounge area on the ground floor. The residents expressed that there was a lack of activities in recent months, but that the food provided was very good. There was some evidence of a formal feedback gathering process, but not all residents were fully aware of it. It was noted that management was not visible enough at the home. Regarding the general environment of the home, the Enter and View representatives' overall impression was that staff were struggling to cope in difficult circumstances. On the positive side, the staff interviewed were clearly happy working at the home.

Based on these findings, Healthwatch Salford made a number of recommendations. The report includes responses to these findings and recommendations from the service provider.
