Healthwatch Sheffield carried out an Enter and View visit to Aaron View Care Home, a 30-bed residential care home in Chapeltown. Overall, feedback from residents, relatives and staff was very positive. The home was described as having a strong family atmosphere, helped by its small size and long-serving staff team. Healthwatch found good standards of care planning, staff training and healthcare support, alongside strong connections with the local community.
The environment was clean, well maintained and personalised to residents' preferences. Bedrooms included en-suite facilities, and residents particularly valued the accessible patio area where they could spend time outdoors. While the garden was relatively large, Healthwatch felt it could be used more effectively through features such as raised beds, sensory planting and other accessible outdoor activities to increase engagement for residents.
Healthwatch found evidence of good care management and effective access to healthcare services. Care plans were reviewed monthly with residents, and the home worked closely with district nurses, GPs, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dentists and opticians. Staff monitored hydration, nutrition and medication carefully, and residents approaching the end of life were supported to remain in the home where possible. Relationships between staff and residents appeared warm, respectful and personalised, with staff demonstrating a detailed understanding of individuals' preferences and needs.
Activities were identified as a growing strength. A newly appointed activities coordinator was expanding opportunities including crafts, bingo, chair-based exercise, seasonal events and planned outings. The home also maintained links with local groups, including Brownies, musicians and visiting animals. Healthwatch recommended continuing to develop activities, making greater use of outdoor spaces, providing more stimulating visual materials and newsletters for residents, and exploring additional support for staff involved in end-of-life care. The provider responded positively, confirming increased activity provision and ongoing staff development.
