In March 2017, Healthwatch Newham carried out an Enter and View visit to 16 Capel Road as part of a planned strategy to assess the quality of supported living homes in the London Borough of Newham. The aim was to consider how services may be improved and how good practice can be disseminated.
16 Capel Road is a supported living home for people recovering from mental health difficulties, who are working towards independent living. During the visit the Registered Manager, 1 care worker, 1 relative and 3 residents were talked to.
The following areas were addressed during the visit and included in the report:
• Care Planning
• Management of Residents Health and Wellbeing
• Staff and Staff Training
• Activities
• Food
• Premises
• Engagement with Relatives/Residents/ Carers:
• Compliments/Complaints/Incidents
The report said the service had many strengths. The house has been well maintained and provides a safe and pleasant environment in which residents can feel comfortable. The report highlighted the proactive and highly caring staff.
Minor recommendations were made within the report and included:
• Consider having plants in garden and involve residents in gardening
• Consider an improved Health & Safety course
• Consider having more soft furnishing to make the lounge more homely.
The report includes a response from the service provider stating that the gardening recommendation would be considered and gave the rationale for not undertaking the other recommendations.
