Healthwatch Isle of Wight decided to investigate end of life care after receiving a significant amount of feedback from people concerned about the potential impact of funding cuts to Mountbatten Isle of Wight, which provides specialist support to people with life limiting illnesses and their families. They heard from 188 people.
Many people shared their moving stories of how Mountbatten had provided outstanding care and support for their friends, families and for themselves.
Many people shared how news of the funding cuts to Mountbatten Isle of Wight had affected them, with some expressing deep anxiety about what the future holds for their care.
People were concerned that no account was taken of the Island factor.
The breadth of services provided by Mountbatten—most of them delivered directly in the community—is widely acknowledged and deeply valued by local people.
A lack of engagement with Mountbatten and the wider Isle of Wight community has been highlighted as a cause for concern, with many Islanders feeling their voices have not been heard.
People were concerned about the impact on other services, such as GP services, ED and the ambulance service, should funding to Mountbatten be reduced.
Concerns were raised about the demographic makeup of the Island and in particular, the needs of older people.
