Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cheshire East and Healthwatch Cheshire West and Chester undertook research on palliative and end of life care.  272 people completed a survey.

Most of those who answered the survey had some or more knowledge of palliative care or end of life care. This was particularly marked for people with professional experience.  When asked where people’s knowledge came from, the option of a family member receiving (or having received) palliative and end of life care scored highest, followed by “general knowledge”.

Almost all recognised that hospices provide palliative and end of life care.  Over half knew that counsellors may be involved in supporting people receiving palliative and end of life care.

Everyone said that control of symptoms at home and support to give carers a break were very important or important aspects of care.

Almost nine in ten respondents felt that we don’t discuss death and dying enough.
