Healthwatch Doncaster were commissioned by Doncaster Council and Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to understand the experiences of users of Doncaster dementia pathway services and their carers. This report on our findings will inform the future strategic direction of services in the pathway and includes insights into dementia services, wider NHS and social care services and wider determinant of health factors. In total, 253 people were engaged with for this report.
Lack of support was a key concern for respondents. Most people felt completely unsupported, had inadequate support or described a lack of follow up. There was a lack of support with the financial implications of having dementia, including care costs.
People also felt that information was lacking about sources of support and how dementia progresses as a condition. Instead they had to find out things for themselves. They would have liked having a single point of contact.
People talked about the complexity of the system, and how things don’t work well together. Hardly anyone mentioned being aware of a pathway or what to expect at each stage.
People had poor experiences of referral processes following diagnoses. However, people were very positive about the actual diagnosis itself.
