Summary of report content

Healthwatch County Durham undertook research on access to dementia support services and the experiences of people living with dementia and their carers. The project was selected as a public priority for 2018/19 and explored whether referrals to support services were being made, whether they were timely, and whether there were differences across the county. Healthwatch gathered feedback through surveys, engagement activities, conversations with people living with dementia, carers and support organisations, receiving 50 responses in total.

The research found that most people first recognised memory problems themselves or through family members, with 90% seeking help from their GP and 76% feeling supported by them. Almost all respondents had been referred to additional services, although 45% reported waiting more than four weeks for a referral. Overall, 80% of respondents were satisfied with the support they received.

A key theme was the importance of early diagnosis and prompt access to support. Participants said that timely referrals and clear information helped patients and families cope with the challenges of dementia. However, some carers reported having to find support services themselves and described delays in diagnosis, limited signposting and difficulties accessing information about benefits, carers’ support and community services.

Healthwatch concluded that most patients and carers were happy with the support available and highlighted the value of local dementia groups and community-based services. Although no clear geographical variations in referral practices were identified, the report emphasised that speedy diagnosis, early referral and quick access to support services can make a significant difference to the wellbeing of people living with dementia and their families.
