Healthwatch Croydon undertook surveys of children and young people’s mental health in two schools. They surveyed 477 children and young people altogether. The survey results from each school are reported separately.
A quarter to a third of the student cohort needed help. Stress is a key trigger for mental health concerns.
A third tried access help with the main source being through friends and family and school. There was less use of other services. Friends and family are a key source for receiving help, then schools. About half found it the help they received useful.
28-40% felt ashamed about needing mental health support, 25% did not know where to get help. Students would still consider friends and family as the main source of help in the future. 16 to 25% said they could not go to anyone.
The report contains recommendations about signposting to sources of help, stress management tools, education and face to face interactions.
