Healthwatch Salford undertook research on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on local residents in November 2020. They spoke to 39 people to understand their experiences of Covid-19, access to information, health services and the wider effects of restrictions.
Most respondents obtained information about the pandemic from the Government and television, although many said the volume of information, changing guidance and conflicting messages were confusing. While 23 people felt they understood the information available, 16 said they still felt somewhat confused. Concerns were also raised about misinformation on social media and the clarity of public messaging.
The pandemic had a significant impact on wellbeing. Seventeen people reported negative effects on their mental health, particularly feelings of isolation, loneliness and stress. Eighteen people said their physical health had been affected, most commonly because of reduced exercise opportunities, while some reported deterioration in their health following cancelled healthcare appointments.
Most people who needed health or care services during the previous month were able to access them, although some reported difficulties obtaining GP or dental appointments and a preference for face-to-face consultations rather than telephone appointments. The report concluded that while people generally felt informed and able to access services, ongoing concerns remained about mental wellbeing, physical health and the clarity of communication during the pandemic.
