Healthwatch Wandsworth did a survey containing 7 questions (Appendix A) which 22 respondents completed at 4 community events attended by carers and a focus group discussion (6 carers) using the toolkit (Appendix B) designed by the Department of Health providing qualitative data.
The survey asked for information on: information and advice on support services, support with life balance for caring responsibilities and education / employment, involvement in decision making and how valued the carer felt.
Findings:
• Lack of information available to carers on services or support
• Choices available to meet the needs of the carer and the cared for
• Lack of addressing the emotional and wellbeing of the carer
• Lack of empathy for the variety of backgrounds of the carer and their circumstances
• Lack of training opportunities and practical solutions
• Ease of access to health and care professionals
• Lack of understanding of the knowledge that carers can offer the health and care professionals in dealing with the needs of the cared for
• Lack of involvement in the communication, planning and decisions
• Identification of the carer
• Access to suitable respite when required whether short, medium or long term including under emergency circumstances.
