Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cheshire and members of the Strategic Collaborative Cheshire (SCC) created a short, online survey to find out what people understand about palliative and end of life care and their attitudes to discussing death and dying. The survey was shared with 91 people during May 2021 and this report provides a snapshot of the key findings from the 40 responses that were received in this period.

  • 55% of people stated that they had some knowledge of palliative care
  • Respondents associated the term “palliative care” with finality, end-of-life, and terminal illness, and “end-of-life care” with comfort, pain relief, and preparation.
  • The majority of respondents’ knowledge of palliative and end-of life care came from general knowledge, or a member of their family having received end-of-life care.
  • 80% of respondents did not think that the community discussed death and dying enough.

The findings of this research will be using by the SCC to inform the development of a long-term communications and engagement plan around palliative and end-of-life care.
