Summary of report content

This report details the findings from a survey about the experiences of residents suffering from chronic pain. Healthwatch Derby heard from 309 respondents, from people with 122 different illnesses or conditions. Most respondents (88%) reported having lived with pain for over three years, and 48% reported that their pain was caused by trauma, particularly bereavement, or a life-changing event. Respondents often reported feeling unheard or dismissed when asked about their experience getting diagnosed. 10% of respondents felt that the biggest quality of life improvement that could be made would be ensuring that their GP listens to and understands their pain. 53% of respondents report feeling unsupported. Respondents often spoke about the mental health impact of living with pain.
