Summary of report content

Healthwatch Hammersmith and Fulham undertook a research project on carers after hearing about their poor financial wellbeing.  They wanted to find out how affordable access to services was for carers.  They undertook a survey to which 150 people responded.

Half of the carers care for more than 50 hours a week. Nearly three in five hadn't had a carer's assessment.  Nearly half of these didn't know it was possible to have one.

Three quarters of those that had had an assessment found it helpful.  Over four in five qualified for help.

Nearly half of carer have a long term condition that they attend regular health appointments for.

The top three types of help that carers felt would be useful were support for their mental health, physiotherapy and respite care.

Over a third were not satisfied with their mental health and wellbeing. Two in five were not satisfied with their financial situation.

Nearly half aren't satisfied with their balance of quality of life.
