Summary of report content

Healthwatch Isle of Wight undertook research on local people’s experiences of cancer services on the Isle of Wight. The review brought together feedback from cancer patients, carers and stakeholders to understand experiences across the cancer pathway, including diagnosis, treatment, communication, support services and follow-up care. The report aimed to identify areas of good practice and opportunities to improve cancer services for island residents.

The report found that many people were positive about the care, professionalism and compassion shown by cancer care staff. Participants particularly valued clinical teams, specialist nurses and support services that provided reassurance and continuity during treatment. However, patients also reported challenges relating to communication, coordination between services, access to information, and the emotional impact of waiting for appointments, test results and treatment.

Travel and access issues were recurring themes, particularly where patients needed to attend appointments off the island or navigate multiple services. Participants described the importance of clear communication, practical support and coordinated care throughout their treatment journey. The report also highlighted the value of peer support, holistic support services and personalised approaches that recognise the wider emotional and practical effects of a cancer diagnosis.

The review concluded that while many patients receive high-quality care and support, improvements are needed to strengthen communication, coordination and access to information across the cancer pathway. Healthwatch Isle of Wight recommended continued collaboration between providers, patients and carers to ensure that services are responsive to people’s needs and that patients feel informed, supported and involved in decisions about their care.
