Summary of report content

Healthwatch Southampton wanted to revisit research they did in 2016 about GP registration processes after hearing that some people were experiencing problems registering due to not having the required proof of ID and address. They contacted 20 out of 37 GPs in Southampton to find out whether they could register with GPs and if so what they would need to do.

  • Four out of the 20 practices had closed waiting lists at the time the research was done.
  • Two were open for patients but only for those not already registered locally.
  • Online registration was possible at 15 practices.
  • Three practices stated proof of ID was necessary to register. The other practices stated it is not compulsory, but patients may have to speak to the practice manager to overcome this.
  • A catchment area is in place for all but six of the practices.
