Download (PDF 2.53 MB)Summary of report content
Healthwatch Somerset decided to carry out some focused work looking at access to health and social care services in West Somerset, as they were already aware of issues around access to services in that area, particularly same day urgent care and access to community transport. They arranged drop in sessions and focus group discussions in villages and towns across West Somerset.
Key findings:
Personalised care and positive patient-provider relationships are important and enhance people’s overall satisfaction with healthcare services.
People prefer to book appointments in person, so healthcare providers should accommodate diverse preferences and communication styles among patients.
Good communication, accurate prescription management and responsive emergency care in the community are very important.
The report contains five recommendations, including communication by receptionists, improving triage processes, providing options for accessing services, ensuring GP services are veteran friendly and improve communication barriers to NHS111.
