Healthwatch Dudley partnered with Camphill Village Trust to gather feedback from Shared Lives Carers and people using the service. The aim was to understand the benefits, challenges, and experiences of Shared Lives placements, including access to health, social care, and respite. They spoke to 17 people.
Key findings
- there were positive outcomes for people supported by the Trust. These included:
- Increased independence (e.g., learning to travel alone, engaging in hobbies like football, holidays, and volunteering).
- Opportunities for meaningful activities, though funding cuts have reduced access to day centres.
- Carer Experiences
- Described as a “vocation” and “rewarding career,” but also demanding and 24/7.
- Carers often act as advocates, welfare advisers, and coordinators for health and social care.
- Training is valued but can feel overwhelming due to mandatory online modules.
- Challenges Identified
- Respite: Previously paid respite has been withdrawn; unpaid breaks risk burnout.
- Health & Social Care Access: Long waiting times, lack of continuity with GPs, and reduced community nursing support.
- Financial Support: Universal Credit processes are complex and stressful.
- Social Care Gaps: Reduced day services and fewer social workers increase pressure on carers.
