Understanding patient and family/friend/carer experience of rapid Covid-19 hospital discharge

Summary of report content

Healthwatch Brighton and Hove, Healthwatch East Sussex and Healthwatch West Sussex spoke to 45 people to assess the impact of the new hospital discharge process in their area.

Several people found it difficult to know when they had gone into hospital and when discharged and how long they had been in hospital. That appeared to be either because they were quite muddled by their hospital experience (not their mental capacity, for example, dementia), or had been in and out of hospital or had rehab at the end so remembering dates and experiences was difficult.

On the whole, participants seemed a very poorly group of people. Most were very old, and contrast to the age-group of referrals for wellbeing checks, as experienced by Healthwatch Brighton and Hove. It seemed that none had had a follow-up call, which leaves a question as to who is monitoring the wellbeing of these people.

The report includes four recommendations.
