Healthwatch Derby undertook research about women from ethnic minority communities’ experience of maternity care following NHS England writing to all providers to look at perinatal support for these groups during the Covid-19 pandemic. They undertook a survey to which 19 women responded.
Women had a range of experiences of care during their pregnancy. Positive and negative issues were raised about their care and treatment and communications.
Women had a range of experiences of giving birth. One woman who lost her baby had no support during labour due to Covid.
Largely women had positive experiences of post-natal support. They got the support they needed and felt listened to.
The women wanted:
- Better communication, including interpretation
- Better integrated and consistent care
- Longer visiting times during Covid restrictions
