Shaping Places for Healthier Lives’ is a joint grant programme between The Health Foundation and Local Government Association. The programme aims to create the conditions for better health by funding local partnerships to take system-wide action on the wider determinants of health. Shropshire Council was one of those selected. In November 2019, Shropshire Council Public Health created a project team, including Healthwatch Shropshire.
Between February and April 2021 Healthwatch Shropshire ran the public and organisational engagement for the Shaping Places for Healthier Lives Food Insecurity Project focused on South-West rural Shropshire. The aim was to understand people’s experiences of living with food poverty and gather insight from the organisations working with or supporting them from the public and voluntary sector.
Healthwatch Shropshire ran two online surveys, conducted 11 interviews and led four focus groups. The report summarises feedback from 22 people with lived experience, 121 people from public and community sector organisations, and 33 people who took part in four Zoom sessions.
The report describes a number of findings from each of these groups, along with 11 recommendations.
