Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Healthwatch Peterborough produced a Health and Care Experience profile for a person of South Asian ethnicity with diabetes. This was to inform a project led by Healthwatch England and NHS England to develop a qualitative methodology as part of the Local Integration Index. Eight local Healthwatch piloted this methodology by focussing on particular local groups with experiences of care across several health and care services. This methodology can be used to ensure people’s experiences of integration are used by local systems to track how services are working together locally.
They interviewed 8 people of South Asian ethnicity with diabetes for this report.
They found that whilst people are receiving annual health checks, they didn’t cover offers of integrated services or support groups. Most wanted an app to log and share their self-tests with their GP. Most also wanted an online peer support group during Covid-19 restrictions and face to face meetings when possible. People also talked about exercise, diet, podiatry, diabetes health courses and smoking cessation.
The report contains 10 recommendations about information provision, support groups, mental health provision, availability of appointments, joined up services and annual reviews.
