Summary of report content

Healthwatch Oldham and Healthwatch Rochdale undertook an enter and view visit to the Maternity Post Natal ward at Royal Oldham Hospital on 26 June 2024.  They spoke to 23 people.  This was a revisit of a service they visited in 2023.

What was working well

The ward was clean and tidy.

Safe Environment, buzzer system to let people in and out and better signage for doorways.

Patients commented they felt safe on the ward, and they appreciated the video cameras for added security.

Communication between patients and staff was good.

Development and progression opportunities for staff.

What could be improved

  • Visiting Restrictions.
  • Response time to patients.
  • Information only available in English (posters, displays, leaflets, apps).
  • Not easy to locate fire exits (picture).
  • Cost of parking and parking in general at Royal Oldham Hospital.
  • Staffing numbers (not enough people on each shift to meet higher demands – although within legal ratios and recruitment out)

The report has seven recommendations on birth plans, information to be provided in community languages, access to interpreters; fans, information about breastfeeding support and apps.  The report contains a response from the provider.
