Healthwatch Rotherham wanted to give autistic people and people with learning difficulties the chance to tell services what is working and what isn't; and how well healthcare services care for them and talk, listen to and understand them and provide reasonable adjustments for them. They undertook a survey and spoke to parents and carers. They spoke to 65 people.
Key findings
- Over half of people who completed a survey weren't given any reasonable adjustments.
- Most people didn't have or didn't know about health passports
- Hospital and GP waiting rooms needed to cater better for autistic people and people with learning difficulties
- People told us they had problems with healthcare staff explaining things clearly
- A number of people told us they felt they weren’t listened to enough. People felt their problems were not looked at properly.
- Not everyone is having their annual health check
- Over four in five felt safe in healthcare settings
- Over half felt they were getting good care
- Some services provide extra support for autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
