Healthwatch Wigan and Leigh conducted research into the experiences of those living with a disability or long term condition during the outbreak of COVID-19. They shared an online survey through their mailing lists, social media and networks within the Wigan Borough with the aim of collecting experiences of local people to support the planning and delivery of local health and social care services.
The survey received 38 responses, 30 of who considered themselves to be at high risk from COVID-19. Despite this, the survey found that 27 respondents had not received a text or letter telling them to shield. The survey found that most respondents (90%) had been able to find the information and advice they required in the forms or languages that suited their needs.
The survey also asked about the impact the coronavirus outbreak has had on mental health and wellbeing, with many responding that the pandemic had impacted upon their mental health. The majority of those who had suffered from mental health issues as a consequence of the pandemic most routinely found support from their family and friends rather than mental health care providers.
