Healthwatch Croydon conducted a survey between August and October 2020 to gather experiences of 70 shielders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report found that most shielders received information about medication and food shopping, although, less for befriending services. Friends and family met most of the shielders needs, with over a quarter relying on neighbours. Organisation of food parcels was not always consistent. Significant numbers were not aware of specific services but said they would have used them had they been told, suggesting a communications gap between services available and unmet need. Shielders reporting needing mental health support.
A number of recommendations were made in this report, such as improving communication, effective monitoring processes, and understanding needs.
