Summary of report content

Healthwatch Oldham undertook research into Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) as it had been a topic of concern with people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. They undertook a survey to which 45 people responded.

Nearly 9 in 10 people had spoken to a healthcare professional about DNAR.  Nearly 70% of these had had the conversation during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nearly two thirds of the conversations took place in hospital.

Nearly two thirds agreed or strongly agreed that DNAR was explained to them in a way they understood.  A third strongly disagreed with the decision being made about DNAR.  Over a third strongly disagreed that their views were considered when deciding DNAR.

Over half agreed or strongly agreed that the conversation happened at the right time. Just over half felt the conversation was handled sensitively compared to 38% who felt it was not.

There were 8 recommendations about training of medical staff, timing of the conversation, the need to consult patients and family; reviewing the pathway; time to think; clear communication; thinking about the impact of the conversation and undertaking further research to understand the impact of this issue on under-represented groups.
