Tower Hamlets analysed 60 comments about the COVID-19 vaccine, collected through social media and their usual outreach. They identified key themes in the comments, ranging through hopeful that the vaccine will bring an end to lockdown, to distrustful of how fast it has been approved, or more generally distrustful of vaccines as a whole.
They used this data to build an engagement strategy, suggesting that a successful strategy to increase uptake and awareness of the COVID-19 vaccine would need to consider people’s attitudes towards the vaccine, access to information about the vaccine, and where people get their information from.
Between April and June 2020, Healthwatch Tower Hamlets conducted a survey that 663 people took the time to respond to. They found that most people used official websites and social media to stay informed on COVID-19.
Healthwatch Tower Hamlets identified potential obstacles to accessing the vaccine. These included questions on who would administer the vaccine and where, and how will this information be made accessible to all.
