Summary of report content

Healthwatch Derbyshire was approached by the City and County Breastfeeding Strategic group and the Maternity Transformation recovery cell and asked to gather feedback to find out what it’s been like to breastfeed during COVID-19.

Information was collated through comments on direct messages, email and targeted Facebook posts.

Several key themes were brought out in this report.

  • A lack of support and signposting given following birth
  • Positive experiences were had of virtual support groups, for example being able to join meetings with community groups in areas other than where they lived
  • A lack of suitable virtual support given from the NHS, and there were limitations, with many mothers wanting someone to physically see their baby
  • The inability to breastfeed negatively impacting mental health
