Healthwatch Northumberland decided to undertake research on mental health services as it was the second most chosen issue in their Annual Survey 2020. Mental health services had a high dissatisfaction rating – of those that use them 79 people said they were dissatisfied with mental health services (54%) - this was the only time more people said they were dissatisfied with a service than said they were satisfied with it.
People felt there could be more local mental health services, and those that already existed should have more resources. They thought that improvements can be made in coordination of care and communication between mental health services, and in the communication between mental health services and patients or carers.
Patients and carers also told Healthwatch that there are lots of mental health services which people don’t know about, including social prescribing.
Patients and carers told Healthwatch that the waiting times were too long for mental health services and see this as a critical issue. Some respondents also felt the waiting times for CYPS mental health services were too long and needed addressing.
