During August and September 2020, Healthwatch Enfield engaged with local care and nursing home staff, residents, and relatives to hear how the Coronavirus outbreak is impacting them. This report sets out the views into what worked well and areas where experiences of residents and relatives can be improved while ensuring that staff feel supported.
Feedback from staff highlighted that they would need continued support moving forward, particularly in the event of a second wave. This includes continued access to PPE and testing and clear government guidance; regular phone calls from Enfield Council and guidance and support to reassure they are ‘doing the right things’; more recognition for care staff such as priority shopping hours and NHS discounts; improved communications with staff to make sure they are kept informed; and clear guidance on access to GP support and new IT links to healthcare systems.
Feedback from residents and relatives highlighted that there needs to be good and regular communication with them. The communication must be consistent across homes and residents and relatives should be consulted in relation to restrictions so that there is an opportunity to understand their wider impact.
