Summary of report content

Healthwatch Dudley evaluated access to eyecare from 55 Black, Asian and minority ethnic respondents to a survey and focus groups, 43 people with learning disabilities, and 12 people with dementia.

Respondents Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups reported that opticians shops were generally well kept and allowed for people to feel comfortable. There was mixed awareness about the option for home visits. There is a lack of continuity of care as people generally see different opticians. People with learning disabilities reported that the surroundings were comfortable and staff were available to talk to. It was reported that people with learning disabilities were supported to complete paperwork. People with dementia reported limited facilities but that opticians explained what was happening during the appointment.

A number of recommendations were made in the report relating to communication, opticians' premises, staff and the appointments.

No service provider response was reported.
