Between March and June 2024, Healthwatch Derbyshire collected the views and experiences of 717 people on the flu and COVID vaccinations. This was a commissioned (paid for) piece of research that was co-produced with Public Health at Derbyshire Country Council. They intended the research to influence the 2024 flu and COVID winter campaign.
Key findings
Most people are positive about both vaccinations. However, there were more negative responses to the COVID vaccination compared with the flu vaccination. People also felt the flu vaccination was more important.
Even though most people got vaccinated and planned to in the future, some people were unsure or didn’t want to get vaccinated.
The survey shows that making it easier to get vaccinated could help. It also shows that providing clear information on safety, testing, and side effects would benefit the public and healthcare professionals.
However, this will not convince everyone. Some people said nothing would change their minds. Two important factors to address for those who said they wouldn’t change their mind are:
- Safety concerns
- Building trust in the communities
