Between June 2019 and September 2019 Healthwatch Cheshire East and Healthwatch Cheshire West attended the five Pride events taking place across Cheshire. Using a survey, they collected 162 people's experiences of health and care services.
The report found that transgender people reported a lack of signposting of information regarding treatment and support from the NHS and their local GP's websites. Some GPs had a lack of understanding and sensitivity concerning trans people. There is a lack of joined up working between private Gender Specialists and GPs. The Recovery College was praised highly in providing excellent counselling, diagnosis and support with mental health. People had also reported negative experiences with their GPs when they declared their sexuality.
Healthwatch Cheshire West and East made the following recommendations that GPs should provide consistent and easy ways to find information to support the Trans community and that existing knowledge across the CCG should be improved to support the LGBTQ+ community around specific health needs.
